About Kelowna.com
Marshall Jones, managing editor
Marshall Jones hand-picked the best and brightest journalists and writers to reflect this city. The new Kelowna.com is his vision of how the time-tested fundamentals of community journalism evolve to use the immediacy and rich content the web affords, backed by the advantage of having the best domain possible: Kelowna.com
With almost 15 years of news experience and 10 years in the city, Marshall has covered everything from the rise of the Kelowna Rockets to the loss of Western Star Trucks and the tragedies and victories of the Okanagan Mountain Park fire. He has earned multiple awards for writing about business, arts, crime and features, showing the range of his interests and abilities. This is his first assignment as editor, which he considers an advantage in redefining the culture of news in a new medium.
“Kelowna has enjoyed one of the most competitive media markets in Canada per capita for many years,” he says. “I hope our great city will find the best elements of radio, television and print in one new home at Kelowna.com.”
We are open for business. Send your information to news@kelowna.com or reach Marshall directly at 250-575-0831.
John McDonald
West Kelowna is its own community and deserves its own in-depth news coverage. Veteran reporter and editor John McDonald will be providing that coverage through the immediacy of the Internet.
John has worked in the past for both of Kelowna’s old school newspapers, covering a variety of beats, most recently as the editor of the Westside Weekly.
“I’ve been covering the Westside since the governance referendum and through both civic elections, including the naming debate,” said McDonald. “West Kelowna, more than other places in the valley, has a vibrancy you can only find with a new community, and I love it.”
You can reach John with news tips and other story ideas at 250-575-0521 or john@Kelowna.com.
Chuck Poulsen
Chuck Poulsen brings his unique wit, experience and insight to Kelowna.com as a columnist every Wednesday.
Chuck worked for The Province newspaper in Vancouver for 12 years, covering assignments from murder trials to the Canucks and the Legislature. He then worked for himself in advertising before spending 15 years with The Daily Courier in Kelowna.
I am intrigued by the technology Kelowna.com has brought to reporting local issues as well as those from around the globe,
said Poulsen. My job will be to give you a fresh and often critical view of what’s happening in our community and our lives.
You can contact Chuck Poulsen at needlepoint@shaw.ca.
Chris Stanford
Chris Stanford has been in the journalism business for more than 20 years, starting as a photographer covering everything from breaking news to sports and feature stories in Quebec, Ontario and British Columbia. As a resident of Kelowna for 15 of those years, he has branched out as writer and videographer specializing in sports and entertainment. He has covered everything from junior hockey to jazz improvisation.
“I’m always looking for not only what happened on the scoreboard, but also why athletes and sports fans do what they do,” he said. As a participant in many sports, he brings his keen eye to the fields and arenas of our town and seeks to bring out the side of sporting life that others pass by.
To share your events and results or to contact Chris directly, email sports@Kelowna.com or call/SMS 250-575-3981.
Joe Fries
Crime might tear communities apart, but it can also be a great unifier when people get fed up and decide to do something about it. In the fight against crime, knowledge is power. Reporter Joe Fries brings you the knowledge through his coverage of crime, cops and the courts for Kelowna.com.
“Like few other issues, crime cuts right across society, affecting everyone from the poorest homeless person to the wealthiest upper-class family,” says Fries, who brings three years’ experience at daily newspapers to the job.
“I want to cut through the messages from official channels and paint a more accurate picture of crime in this city — and it may not be pretty.”
If you can help Fries connect the dots, please contact him at joe@Kelowna.com or (250) 575-4303.
