It’s worth noting that the meters installed in Kelowna in 1995 have made a difference. In the city’s utility newsletter, it reports the amount of water used by residents has dropped 28 per cent between 1995 and 2008. Also, the different pricing idea for heavy users has been in place in Kelowna for a number of years. The rate goes from 25 cents per cubic metre if you use a low amount, up to nearly $1 if you exceed 125 cubic metres per month.
If I am correct about human nature, nothing will be done about this problem until it reaches crisis proportions like happened in Tofino a few years ago. Then the response will likely be radical conservation measures as the locals prefer to shoot themselves in the foot and lower their quality of life rather than doing the sensible thing and controlling population growth because, after all, “growth is inevitable.” As Einstein said, “There are only two things that are infinite — the universe and human stupidity, and I’m not sure about the universe.”
it is up to the individual communities to initiate water restrictions through tougher bylaws. there is no sense in watering lawns 24/7 or watering roof tops to keep your House cool. also the practice of certain Farmers needs to be regulated. some orchards and hay farmers are over watering for financial gain. this is a highly questionable practice as everyone is tapping into the same water fields. wasting all that water for a few extra bales of Hay does not make any sense.
