Kathy Michaels

Kathy Michaels has covered the Okanagan business community for the last three years and is looking forward to taking her insights to a new and innovative product in Kelowna.com. Throughout her time working for both the Kelowna Capital News and the Penticton Western News, she’s provided readers with a clear view of what was happening in their community during one of the most turbulent economies in recent memory.

While she was most keenly interested in the changes in the real estate market, Michaels has also taken the time to find out businesses that flourished and innovated as the economy began to stagnate and later show signs of revival.

For the last few months, she’s also shared her opinions on politics and pop culture through her column Kathartic, and intends to continue that work at kelowna.com. Michaels is excited to turn her attention to a medium that offers news to its readers on a much more immediate basis.

Read Kathy’s column Fridays.

“Boomer guilt—Gen Xer’s sense of impending doom and Y’s fondness for do-goodery—was exploited and environmental consumerism became big business, turning everyone with a Made-In-China, re-usable polyester grocery bag into the next Al Gore.”

We’re morphing into a nation of dirty poor-sports with some serious border issues. Sounds a bit like somebody else I’ve spent my life not being, and  if you need a hint, it’s not the North Americans who eat poutine. They prefer freedom fries.

“Crimes against good taste aside, Walters was always an unusual journalist. She’s interviewed some of the most frightening and powerful figures on the globe, but  those peaks in news delivery were overshadowed by her ability to peddle soft Hollywood smut.”

“Nobody else was fit to close this chapter of B.C.’s spandex and sequin clad history than the world’s reigning queen of cheese, and we really need to put a proper lid on these Games.”

“Personally, I can’t wait to visit Fun-Couver and see a slice of my province drenched in a bit of Coca-Cola’s happiness. If I’m going to pay for it the rest of my life, I may as well enjoy.”

“Not only is he from B.C., but there’s nobody as  protester-proof as  Family Ties’ Alex P. Keaton. Would anyone approve of dumping Olympic hatred on him?”

“Of all the people to take a swing at the feminist angle, should it really be the former porn star?”
