Chuck Poulsen

Chuck Poulsen brings his unique wit, experience and insight to Kelowna.com as a columnist every Wednesday.

Chuck worked for The Province newspaper in Vancouver for 12 years, covering assignments from murder trials to the Canucks and the Legislature. He then worked for himself in advertising before spending 15 years with The Daily Courier in Kelowna.

I am intrigued by the technology Kelowna.com has brought to reporting local issues as well as those from around the globe, said Poulsen. My job will be to give you a fresh and often critical view of what’s happening in our community and our lives.

Kathy Michaels

Kathy Michaels has covered the Okanagan business community for the last three years and is looking forward to taking her insights to a new and innovative product in Kelowna.com. Throughout her time working for both the Kelowna Capital News and the Penticton Western News, she’s provided readers with a clear view of what was happening in their community during one of the most turbulent economies in recent memory.

While she was most keenly interested in the changes in the real estate market, Michaels has also taken the time to find out businesses that flourished and innovated as the economy began to stagnate and later show signs of revival.

For the last few months, she’s also shared her opinions on politics and pop culture through her column Kathartic, and intends to continue that work at kelowna.com. Michaels is excited to turn her attention to a medium that offers news to its readers on a much more immediate basis.

Read Kathy’s column Fridays.

John McDonald

West Kelowna is its own community and deserves its own in-depth news coverage. Veteran reporter and editor John McDonald will be providing that coverage through the immediacy of the Internet.

John has worked in the past for both of Kelowna’s old school newspapers, covering a variety of beats, most recently as the editor of the Westside Weekly.

“I’ve been covering the Westside since the governance referendum and through both civic elections, including the naming debate,” said McDonald. “West Kelowna, more than other places in the valley, has a vibrancy you can only find with a new community, and I love it.”

You can reach John with news tips and other story ideas at 250-575-0521 or john@Kelowna.com.

Joe Fries

Crime might tear communities apart, but it can also be a great unifier when people get fed up and decide to do something about it. In the fight against crime, knowledge is power. Reporter Joe Fries brings you the knowledge through his coverage of crime, cops and the courts for Kelowna.com.

“Like few other issues, crime cuts right across society, affecting everyone from the poorest homeless person to the wealthiest upper-class family,” says Fries, who brings three years’ experience at daily newspapers to the job.

“I want to cut through the messages from official channels and paint a more accurate picture of crime in this city — and it may not be pretty.”

If you can help Fries connect the dots, please contact him at joe@Kelowna.com or (250) 575-4303.
