A new, $15,000 award has been created to recognize promising young Canadian performers of classical music.
The Canada Council for the Arts and the National Youth Orchestra of Canada announced the Michael Measures Prize Tuesday in Toronto.
The prize is being established with a $1 million bequest from Michael Measures, an Ottawa classical music lover who died in 2008.
The first award is to be given in summer 2011 and will go to a musician aged 16-22 who has completed the summer training program with the NYOC.
The NYOC, a non-profit organization devoted to the discovery and training of young Canadian classical musicians, will co-ordinate and supervise the competition.
Measures, a native of Ottawa and a graduate of McGill University in Montreal, was a volunteer with Ottawa arts and heritage groups, including the Laurentian Junior Music Club and the Canadian Music Competitions.
