A Kelowna-based media organization is proving there is a market for good-news stories.

Axiom News opened a local office in November and in months to come, it will be delivering its special brand of journalism to Western Canada.

“We work with organizations; elevating their people, culture and effectiveness by telling their stories and posting them on their websites every day,” said Fraser Wilson, Axiom’s CEO, who recently left the Peterborough office to open the Kelowna counterpart.

There are good-news stories coming out of organizations every day, he explained, but they’re often lost in the shuffle.  Axiom provides a mechanism to publicly profile the individuals that do that work, enhancing the company’s culture.

“We’re Corporate News 2.0,” said Wilson. “We are really at the leading edge of what corporate communications might look like … as the old saying goes any organization is only as good as the people who work there.”

Their work is about more than  spreading good will, however. Numerous studies have proven that a good corporate culture goes a long way in improving the economic standing of a company, enabling it to keep its employees longer.

“People want to go to a place where they’re rewarded and their creativity and best selves are brought to life,” said Wilson. “They want to make a contribution  and the more they can be recognized, the better they feel, and  the better they feel the more they look to do better work.”

It’s proven to be the case at Axiom as well.  They were named as just one of 44 organizations on the WorldBlu List of Most Democratic Workplaces 2010, making this the fourth consecutive year the news agency has been recognized for its  democratic practices.

“We are excited to be part of a movement to build businesses where team members have the opportunity to play to their
strengths and contribute to decision-making processes,” said Axiom News president Peter Pula.

“A diversity of opinions at the table leads to better decisions and cultivates a managerial vision throughout the company.
Our newsroom encourages an open, dynamic culture, where decisions are made on a daily basis playing to people’s strengths and the situation at hand.”

The announcement came yesterday, April 13, which is the fourth annual Democracy in the Workplace Day.

WorldBlu is an Austin, Texas-based organization specializing in democracy in the workplace. Organizations in the for-profit, non-profit, non-governmental and governmental sectors that have been in operation for at least a year with five or more employees are eligible to apply for the WorldBlu award.
