A Kelowna creeper got much more than he bargained for when he tried spying on a woman and child in a change room at a local swimming pool.

Cops say the unidentified 25-year-old man placed a mirror under the divider separating two stalls in the family change room at the Parkinson Recreation Centre in order to observe the victim and her three-year-old child. He’s since been charged with voyeurism.

The woman spotted the mirror and alerted staff members, who escorted the man from the centre. He fled on a motorcycle, the licence plate number of which was recorded and provided to police, who arrested him at his home on Thursday.

Kelowna RCMP spokesman Const. Steve Holmes told reporters today the man may have picked his victim out of the crowd.

“Apparently our (victim) noticed this person watching her during the (public) swim portion and sort of made a mental note of that, and didn’t connect the two until after the incident in the stall.”

Holmes was uncertain if it was the child or the mother the man was watching: I’m guessing both…. This person certainly had access to watching both.”

Voyeurism is listed in the Canadian Criminal Code as a sexual offence, defined as surreptitiously observing a naked person with the use of a mechanical or electronic aid. It carries a maximum sentence of five years’ imprisonment.

The suspect was released on a promise to appear and is expected in court in May. One of the conditions of his release prohibits him from visiting any city-operated recreational facilities.
