The Okanagan College baseball team’s trip to Vancouver Island was a tough one, after the Coyotes dropped three of four this weekend.

The trip to the Island began with a schedule change thanks to Friday’s storms on the coast made the fields in Nanaimo unplayable. Vancouver Island University, the Coyotes competition for the weekend, managed to prepare the fields as best they could and play began Saturday.

In game one, Coyotes pitcher Rob Alksne threw a complete game, allowing four hits, while collecting four strikeouts as the visitors won 3-2. OC made no errors behind Alksne while Reed Quall led the way offensively,  going 2-for-3 at the plate,  while driving in a run.

Game two saw Coyotes ace Cory Wood turn in a a poor outing, giving up eight runs on 10 hits, while the bullpen also struggled in a 10-7 loss. The Coyotes, despite their pitching problems, had a cache to salvage victory late in the game, but blew their when they left the bases loaded in bottom of the ninth.

In games three and four on Sunday, the Coyotes couldn’t keep pace with VIU’s offence.

Game 3 saw OC hold a 4- 2 lead going into bottom of sixth when, with the bases loaded, a ground ball to third was thrown wildly to second, tying the score before adding a second in the same inning, giving VIU a 5-4 win.

After a two-hour rain delay, Blake Young started game four for OC and had a rough first inning. Young allowed two walks, a couple hits, and found themselves down 2-0.  Young settled down after his early struggles, pitching a scoreless game, though it was a lost cause. OC just could not push any runners across the plate and while managin only two hits.

The Coyotes will now turn their attention to this weekend, when they host Thompson Rivers University in their home opener. Saturday’s game is scheduled for a 1 p.m. start, while Sunday’s game begins at 11 a.m.

Both games will be played at Elks Stadium.
