Number of the day: 3,500. That’s the weekend haul of marijuana plants seized by the RCMP this weekend in two houses. That’s right, two houses. You’ve heard of bigger operations, but usually on rural land, in barns, giant greenhouses or even underground bunkers. But lately police have been finding these massive grow operations inside homes, often rentals.
RCMP Const. Steve Holmes said yesterday he couldn’t speak to why people keep growing marijuana “beyond the obvious.” He means it’s incredibly lucrative, sales are tax free and while illegal, criminal penalties would seem to be worth the risk and half the public has little problem with it.
Besides “the obvious” there are other issues with these operations. The owners of these rental homes have to pay big cash to restore their licence of occupation. If not done properly, it can cause heavy mould and the increased heat and moisture in a home can cause walls to expand, damaging even the foundations of the home. The greatest risk, however, comes from the amateur re-wiring of the homes and the threat that can pose to anyone going near it. With well over 1,000 plants in these homes, you know they are doing serious work on those wires, posing a very serious and specific threat.
Quotes of the day:
“In other words, there’s no appetite for more wealth redistribution or social intervention – the great Liberal project ever since the 1960s. People are also realistic. They know their governments are deeply in the hole, and that neither corporate taxes nor the Easter Bunny are going to dig them out.” Margaret Wente, Globe and Mail
