The Okanangan College Coyotes started out the defence of their division title on Saturday, with dominating pitching performances leading to two wins over division rivals Kwantlen Eagles, 7 – 0 and 3 -1.
The experience and lessons learned from playing the past three weekends against U.S. Junior College teams were retained as the Coyotes made only two errors all weekend, only issued two walks and gathered 15 hits.
In game one, Coyotes pitcher Cory Wood tossed a dominating four-hit, six strikeout shutout while Tanner Betcker went 3-for-4 at the plate while collecting three stolen bases. Teammate Bryce Wilkie chipped in with two RBI’s while going collecting two hits in four plate appearances as the Coyotes dumped the Eagles 7-0.
In game two, the Coyotes used a solid pitching performance from starter Kiefer Rodway to propel them to a 3-1 win. Rodway pitched seven innings, allowing one unearned run while collecting two strikeouts before giving the ball to the bullpen. Calan Evancio and Bryce Wilkie din’t let Rodway and the Coyotes, as the two sealed the deal. Coyotes Adam Parliament got things started offensively when he led off the top of the second inning with a home run that soared over the right centre field wall.
Unfortunately for the Coyotes final two games on Sunday were rained out. Both games will be rescheduled, with the dates to be yet to determined.
