It took Aaron Heidt just one hour and eleven minutes to win Okanagan College’s Campus-to-Campus Half Marathon on Sunday morning. A flat and fast new out-and-back course, great conditions, and lots of support provided by dozens of race volunteers helped the Vernon man to a first place finish. Rory Switzer, who has won the race in previous years, finished second (1:18:15) ahead of Vernon’s Skeets Morel (1:19:03) in third.

On the women’s side, Surrey’s Shannon Thompson won first prize, running 21.1 kms in 1:25:36. Coming in two minutes behind her was Vernon’s Sarah Clark (1:27:39), followed by Kelowna’s Christy Lovig (1:29:06).

More than 600 runners registered for one of the College’s running events held on Sunday. The title event drew 313 registered runners, the 10 K race included 136 runners and 167 people participated in the half marathon relay.

Randy Werger, president of the Kelowna Running Club, won the 10 K race in a time of 40:08. Kelowna runners also finished second and third: Dion Torhjelm finished in 40:09 and Jeff Vogt came in with a time of 40:54.

The women’s 10 K was won by Kelowna runner Michelle Blackburne (41:15). Second place went to Clare Murphy of Lake Country (43:31) and Dylan Erhardt (43:50).

Thirty-five teams competed in the half marathon relay, which was won by team Just in Time (1:32:18). Second place went to team CrossFit Glenmore (1:33:04) and third place was won by the Dr. Knox Eh’s (1:34:46).

Race organizers were pleased with the outcome of the race and gave community volunteers much of the credit for the event’s success.

“We made a lot of changes to our race this year,” said Christine Ulmer, Race Director. “We changed the course dramatically, added a 10 K component and were required to come up with nearly twice the number of volunteers than we’ve needed in the past. Watching it all come together on race day was really inspiring. Our community responded tremendously by volunteering their time and I heard such positive feedback from the runners about the great route support.

“We also have an incredible team of race directors from Okanagan College who put a great deal of thought and effort into making this event fun and accessible to all kinds of runners. This year we saw a lot more young people get involved and our overall numbers are up 20 per cent over last year.”

Winners of the Bookworm Relay Race, Just In Time, who entered the race at the last minute, edged out Crossfit Glenmore. Exact relay times were not available.

Over six hundred runners took part in the half-marathon, 10-K and relay races along the newly revised route that took them out from the Okanagan College KLO campus on KLO Road through the City Park tunnel and into the North End before returning.

The race took place under cloudy skies, which kept temperatures warmer during the early spring event. Organizers reported no major traffic problems along the 21.1 kilometre course and only minor medical issues. Visit for race results.
