There will plenty of glitz and glamour this Friday at the second annual Swinging with the Stars celebrity dance event being held at the Coast Capri hotel, and a few surprises as well.

But if you don’t already have a ticket to the sold-out night, you might just have to wait until the third annual event rolls around to see it in person. Based on the popular Dancing with the Stars television show, the fundraiser pairs four single dancers and two couples with their own private dance instructors and working under their guidance, they have each worked out a choreographed routine to impress the judges and vie for one of the awards to be handed out.

But despite the hard work and many hours put in by the contestants like AM 1150’s Phil Johnson and his partner Tracy Hutton and syndicated columnist Lori Welbourne, the real winner will be the Hospice Association, who last year raised $80,000 from the inaugural event.

It doesn’t hurt that each contestant, or pair of contestants as in Johnson and Hutton’s case for example, will also vie for an award presented to the entrant who has managed to collect the most pledges for Hospice, and they all have “campaign managers” to help out.

Although all of the 220 tickets are gone, the Hospice Association always welcomes donations and those that can’t make it to the gala evening can donate by going to or by calling 250-763-5511. You can also drop off a donation at the office of the Central Okanagan Hospice association at 202-1456 St. Paul St.

Phil Johnson should work on that pot belly before hitting the dance floor.
