The Sears National Kids Cancer Ride is one of the biggest and most ambitious charity cycling events on behalf of childhood cancer in the world. From Sept. 9 to 23, Siobhan McManus, a 24 year old commerce student local to Kelowna, will ride a 15-day, 7,000 km trans-Canada odyssey from Vancouver to Halifax.
Along with 43 selected National Riders, Siobhan will traverse the country, joined along the way by thousands of other caring cyclists who cycled shorter distances along the way in cities across Canada. Together, cyclists will raise $2 million on behalf of charities that improve the quality of life for children, and their families, living with and beyond cancer. Our destination – beyond cancer.
“In the 2009 Sears National Kids Cancer Ride I participated as a “ride along marshal” from Kelowna to Vernon.,” said McManus. “Before we rode Phillip Tilley, only 7-years-old, took the microphone and told his story. He proudly exhibited his necklace which spanned from neck to toes. ‘Bravery Beads’ each represent a phase of treatment, a needle poke, a chemo treatment, a surgery, etc. He remembered that his favorite time at the hospital was being let out of isolation to enjoy his fourth birthday. Phillip will be speaking, sharing words of encouragement and hope to open the Cycle to Cure Spin a Thon at 1:15 p.m.”
To raise funds for the National Ride: The ‘Cycle to Cure Spin-a-Thon’ will take place on Saturday March 27 from 1-3 p.m. at the Kelowna, World Gym Fitness Centre in the Dilworth Shopping Plaza.
Fifty volunteer participants will ride 10 minute shifts as a relay race. They will all be dressed up in costumes that correspond with their team names to embody the essence and fun of the childhood spirit. Siobhan McManus, the national rider will be teaching the class. Your are invited to come out to the event, cheer on our volunteers and enjoy a healthy snack donated by USANA.
The goal on Saturday is to raise $7,500 on behalf of the Coast to Coast Against Cancer Foundation, to support children and their families living with and beyond cancer.
This event is supported by Sears, World Gym, and Usana.
