A Kelowna man has now pleaded guilty to manslaughter in connection with the  2007 death of a teenager who lost his life after ingesting a fatal dose of drugs at a house party.

Jake Cybak entered his guilty plea this morning in B.C. Supreme Court in Kelowna. His trial on charges of manslaughter, criminal negligence causing death and drug trafficking was to have begun this week.

According to previously published reports, 15-year-old Geordie Sutherland was at the Rutland party with a friend on June 2, 2007, when he drank a shot glass full of methadone and then chased it with another.

Cybak is alleged to have provided the methadone, a synthetic opiate.

Police later attended the residence to follow up on a call about an unconscious teen. Sutherland, a Grade 9 student at Springvalley Middle School, was rushed to hospital where he was pronounced dead.

Cybak was not arrested until Jan. 31, 2008.

Sutherland’s parents were in court this morning, but his mom, Carolyn, said she would withhold comment for now.

A pre-sentencing report has been ordered and Cybak is due back in court May 17 to fix a date for sentencing.

Cybak, who was 49 when he was arrested, kept quiet today, except to confirm his guilty plea. Very slim, he wore black pants and a grey shirt, along with a thin moustache and thick black-rimmed glasses.

I think that the parents need to take some responsibility for not properly supervising their 15 year old. And of course, the kid himself is responsible for his own actions, is he not?
