Number of the day: Oh, it’s been called the ass of a pine cone and a bullet hole. But today, that’s Kelowna.com’s entirely *original* version of the number zero. That’s our score on the appointment of logo designer Phred Martin to the City of Kelowna’s Public Art committee. Martin designed the city’s logo that was unveiled last year to great disappointment. It went from bad to worse because soon after it was discovered that another remarkably similar logo already existed.
We never cast judgement in the case; it’s entirely possible two people came up with the same design but we still have outstanding questions. We said: Prove it. Both Phred Martin and the City of Kelowna said they would cooperate and show us earlier versions of the logo so we could see the trail of design. But Martin stopped returning phone calls and the City found reasons not to show them to us.
The City seemed satisfied with Martin’s explanations from the beginning, but so far that looks like lip service. What else would they say? Whatever has them convinced that all is cool with the design and process, they are keeping it behind closed doors. You’d think the City had enough of the controversy without finding its own reason to raise it again. Martin had a cozy relationship with the city before the logo. He worked with the Kelowna Museum and he was chosen to design the $10,000 logo without tender because it was “strategically important to go single source” according to documents we dug up.
