With Sun Peaks Resort recently receiving a well-deserved nod from the prestigious Condé Nast Traveler Magazine, we decided to take a break from Kelowna’s balmy double-digit temperatures and make the two-and-a-half hour drive to visit Canada’s 2nd best (Whistler ranked number one), and North America’s 10th best ski resort. Variety of terrain, minimal lines ups, exciting village centre with extensive non-ski activities, 2,000 hours of annual sunshine, and a snowfall of almost 6 metres per year, helped Sun Peaks earn this crowning achievement.

The Slopes

Sun Peaks, British Columbia’s second largest ski resort, is made up of three unique mountains offering more than 3,600 acres of skiable dry white powder and, the bonus, no crowds (to which we happily attest). The resort’s 122 runs are serviced by 11 lifts, including three high speed quad chairlifts. Every level of skier and snowboarder has access to effortless or challenging runs from each lift, making it a perfect ski getaway for couples, families and groups. Our epic day on the slopes was, indicative of the resorts name, filled with sunshine and of course the smiles and exhilaration that accompany perfect powder set against blue skies. We chose to rent equipment at the hill, and Jardines hooked us up with skis, boots and poles that elevated our performance to rock star status (perhaps a slight embellishment). Whether your pleasure is glades, groomers, open bowls, moguls, or showing off in the terrain park – you will find it at this world-class ski resort.

The Village

A picturesque resort inspired by traditional, quaint Italian alpine villages, Sun Peaks is a master-planned resort designed around ski-in/ski-out access. Upon arriving at Sun Peaks there is no need for a car as everything is easily accessed by ski, snowboard or the old fashioned way, on foot. The vibrant village, surrounded by the three majestic ski hills, exudes cozy warmth with colourful buildings housing hotels and inns, boutique shops, casual cafes and fine dining. There is an exciting energy throughout the pedestrian-oriented village, as guests from around the world window-shop and mingle in the many snow-covered plazas. Dining options are vast and varied, ranging from grab-and-go breakfasts at Tod Mountain Coffee House & Crêperie, to the internationally inspired cuisine of Global Tapas Bar, to the upscale M Room in the Delta Residences which features a delicious menu made from local, sustainable ingredients. There are also numerous sports bars that are great for après ski, and of course the local’s favourite hotspot MackDaddy’s for partying till the wee hours.

Don’t Ski?

Another positive for Sun Peaks is the myriad of activities available beyond skiing, such as tubing, a game of pick-up hockey at the outdoor ice rink, or a horse-drawn carriage ride around the village. Snowshoeing and cross-country skiing are great alternatives to downhill skiing that allow you to experience the resort’s extensive trail system and stunning scenery. If you’re looking for an easier way to get your heart rate up take a snowmobiling tour or try your hand at mushing a team of energetic sled dogs. We took the one-and-a-half hour ‘Have a Howl Dogsled Tour’ and had an absolute blast. The guides were extremely helpful and knowledgeable, and our team of six Alaskan Huskies ran their hearts out, which made for an exhilarating and exciting ride. After any adventure it is always wonderful to unwind, and the Sun Peaks Spa in the Kookaburra Lodge is the perfect way to do so. We recommend the ninety minute Signature Massage with aromatherapy and hot stones to soothe sore, tired muscles, and have you floating on cloud nine.

Where to Stay

There are accommodations to meet the needs of any family, group or couple at Sun Peaks Resort. Within the heart of the village there are nine hotels and lodges, including the luxury four-diamond Delta Sun Peaks Resort featuring two restaurants, health spa, three outdoor hot tubs and an indoor-outdoor heated pool. The adjoining Delta Residences, offering 41 one and two bedroom luxury condominiums with fully equipped kitchens, is a great option for families wanting to stay in the village. Guests who stay at this property also have access to all of the amenities of the Delta Resort. For larger groups, ski-in/ski-out chalets can accommodate two to 40 people, and there are numerous condominiums, townhomes and bed-and-breakfasts available throughout the resort.

After happily spending two adventure filled days enjoying the powdery white snow and blissful blue skies of Sun Peaks Resort, we definitely recommend this mountain to anyone looking for a winter weekend getaway. To learn more about our new favourite ski hill please visit www.sunpeaksresort.com.
