A little bit of Scotland comes to the Kelowna stage with the opening of the Sunshine Theatre Company’s latest offering.
You Fancy Yourself, opening March 10 at the Rotary Centre for the Arts, stars the talented Maja Ardal as six-year-old Elsa, a recent immigrant to 1950’s Scotland in a hilarious and touching one-woman coming of age tale.
Elsa quickly realizes that navigating through her new world of tenements and elf children is harder than she thought, that fitting in means taking on the schoolyard bullies and that being fascinated with the massacre of Glencoe doesn’t make you Scottish.
“It’s . . . easy to recommend You Fancy Yourself as a play with equal portions of heart and humour, both provided in generous amounts,” wrote critic Richard Ouzounian of the Toronto Star newspaper. “The show’s a delight. It’s . . . a virtuoso performance. She has every right to fancy herself,” said Robert Cushman of the National Post.
Maja plays 11 brilliant, quirky characters in an action-packed challenging, humorous and poignant tale of the growing pains of a girl trying to fit in to a new culture.
Following smashing audience and critical success at the 2009 Edinburgh Fringe and a recent sold-out tour of southern England, Kelowna audiences can now enjoy this Contrary Company production, playing from March 10 to 13.
