Steve Omischl.

West Kelowna’s Steve Omischl couldn’t reach the podium, nor could his Canadian teammates, as the host nation failed to finish in the top three in Olympic men’s aerials at Cypress Mountain.

Omischl finished eighth after scoring 112.39 in his first jump and 121.27 on his second for a total of 233.66. While the total put Omischl in front early in the second round, his score didn’t hold up.

Alexei Grishin of Belarus captured the gold medal with a score of 248.41, American Jeret Peterson grabbed silver and China’s Zhongqing Liu won bronze.

For Grishin, the gold in Vancouver comes after he won the bronze medal at the 2002 Winter Olympics in Salt Lake City in the aerials discipline.

He also finished fourth in the aerials final at the 2006 Olympics in Turin, Italy. Canadian Kyle Nissen finished in fifth despite leading the field after the first set of jumps, while Calgary’s Warren Shouldice finished 10th.
