Canada is well placed in the men’s freestyle aerials after Warren Shouldice placed sixth in qualifying Monday.

With a score of 235.93, Shouldice, working with a low degree of difficulty (4.175) compared to the five skiers ahead of him (4.525), trails Zongyang Jie of China, who led all comers with a 242.52 combined score.

Canada’s Kyle Nissen landed a high-difficulty back / double-full / full-full for a score of 19.1 on his air & form and 8.25 on his landing in the first jump in qualifying Monday. That opening jump scored a combined 123.75, good for third in the competition going into the second round of qualifying, but the Canadian failed to stick the landing on his second try, ending up in ninth place.

Shouldice also squibbed his second run, but not to the extent of Nissen, who ended up on one leg after nearly dropping to the snow.

Canada’s Steve Omischl landed rough in both runs and scored a 116.15 and 117.73, good for eighth.

Ryan St. Onge of the United States sits second going into the final with a score of 240.67 after two runs, while Switzerland’s Thomas Lambert sits 2.34 points behind him in third.

The final takes place on February 25th.

Men’s aerials will be the last of six gold medals awarded for freestyle skiing over the course of the eight scheduled days of competition.

Snowmakers and trucks of snow from neighbouring mountains were also brought in to develop the venue.
