The Olympic torch relay will take on star power this week, as Arnold Schwarzenegger and other celebrities take their turns as torchbearers. Vancouver Winter Olympics organizing committee CEO John Furlong confirmed yesterday that the California Governor, pictured, will carry the torch as it passes through Vancouver's Stanley Park on Friday. He will be followed later in the day by Walter Gretzky, father of hockey great Wayne Gretzky — who is among the leading contenders to light the Olympic cauldron at the opening ceremony on Friday. Other torchbearers announced yesterday for the final leg of the relay this week include singers Michael Buble and Jann Arden, Canadian astronaut Julie Payette, former Vancouver Canuck Richard Brodeur, former British Olympian Sebastian Coe, Terry Fox's father, Rolly Fox, rugby legend Gareth Rees, Canucks alumnus Stan Smyl and B.C. Lions great Lui Passaglia.

Why Arnold Schwarzenegger? He is not Canadian. He doesn’t want any filming done in Canada. Wants money to stay in California.

Why the hell would Canada pay for a torch relay and have foreigners run the torch. There are many, many Canadians that are worthy of running.
Whoever made that decision is a pathetic Canadian. I and many others were getting excited about the Olympics. No any more! What a slap in the face…..

I don’t get it… As Amber states we have many Canadians that are worthy of running… I was also disappointed that the flame had to dip into the US!! Why? The games are in Vancouver CANADA!! not a joint venture!!

Schwarznegger is iconic and recognized worldwide. This will bring more recognition to Vancouver in general. Smart move on Vanoc’s part

I just don’t really get it – perhaps Michael Phelps, heck – even Carl Lewis but Arnie? The govenator that actually referred to us as ‘HONGCOUVER’ who is far more well-known for his politics and ‘acting’ than his athlete days (of which he admits to performance enhancements), is a bad choice among so many other noteworthy CANADIANS and international citizens who would add more value. If NBC wants publicity, why isn’t Angelina and Brad running with the torch? Come on, buck up more than Matt Lauer.

Arnold has a home in BC… or, at least he did. I believe it was in the Okanagan. So, he does have roots int he Province. Let’s not start saying foreigners should not participate in the torch relay.
After all. We are a nation of foreigners that have come together to form one of the best countries in the world. Keep that in mind.
