Vernon RCMP media release

An 18-month-old Vernon boy has now died as a result of injuries sustained in a fire Tuesday morning that investigators believe was started by a child playing with a lighter.

A grandmother, mother and two kids under the age of five lived in the unit of a four-plex on 24th Ave. where emergency crews responded around 9:20 a.m.

The mother and the 18-month old were taken to hospital suffering from burns and smoke inhalation. Vernon RCMP were advised this morning that the boy died.

Police and firefighters in Vernon are reminding parents to keep matches and lighters out of reach of kids and to ensure that all your smoke detectors are in place and working.
