June 30, 2004: Donatella Versace's daughter Allegra was turning 18, and her mom's pal Elton John showed up at the birthday party at the family mansion in Milan. But Donatella was the surprised one, as Elton and her daughter and others used the occasion to confront the fashion queen about her cocaine problem.

A new book called House of Versace, by Deborah Ball, recounts the story and the N.Y. Post got an early peek.

The book says John had decided to get involved six weeks earlier, when he saw Donatella have a drug-fuelled meltdown at one of his concerts. The intervention worked, too: the grand dame Versace got on a private plane that night as planned, went to an Arizona rehab clinic, and has been living a less drug-addled life ever since.

The book also names Christopher Ciccone, Madonna's brother, as one of Donatella's drug buddies, back in the day.

It's all over between Charlize Theron and actor Stuart Townsend, her main squeeze these last nine years. She dumped him, says the Daily Mail, right after their Christmas vacation in Mexico. "They had become more like brother and sister than lovers," an un-named friend of Theron's told the paper.

She's keeping the Hollywood Hills house, he gets the Malibu place. She's 34. He's 37.

Will Smith's wife Jada Pinkett Smith told Bunte, a German mag, that "Will is thinking about going into politics. He once said he could imagine becoming a U.S. president. He wasn't joking, he was quite serious about it."

Hmm. He's said this before. We'll see.

I always thought Allison Janney had a gift for comedy that wasn't used much during her time on The West Wing. Now we'll see: she has signed on to Matthew Perry's new sitcom Mr. Sunshine. She'll play his boss; together they manage an arena in San Diego. He's turning 40, see, and he's having this wacky zany mid- life crisis. Sounds like a hoot, doesn't it?

* Spotlight couple: Comedian Sarah Silverman has now confirmed that her latest beau is Alec Sulkin, producer of the cartoon show Family Guy. She's 39.
