Their songs are steeped in 20-something angst, but there’s something strangely uplifting about a Tegan and Sara performance.

From the moment the two Canadian songstresses took to the stage at the Kelowna Community Theatre, the estrogen-heavy audience came alive, bobbing their heads and dancing in the aisles.

The show kicked off with the popular song, Walking with the Ghost before they pulled from their recent album Sainthood, and later  back to older albums like the Con. The 29-year-old women went seamlessly from guitars of varying types to keyboards, keeping their vocals strong throughout. Their three-piece band accompaniment were no slouches either.

But musical prowess isn’t really what makes a Tegan and Sara show a stand-out. The emotional nature of their folky pop blend may or may not resonate, but the comedic and distinctly Canadian aspect of a Tegan and Sara show is unparalleled.

Where other performers ignore the random bits and bobs shouted at them during a show Tegan and Sara  listen and  blend the comments into the mini monologues they’ve honed  over 15 years of performing.

“Let it be natural,” yelled one woman during a typical self-deprecating Tegan and Sara conversation that took place half way through the show.

“Do you feel that I’m not natural?” said Tegan, then asking the young woman what her name and occupation was. More friendly-ish banter ensued, as the girl explained she was a receptionist at a gym.

“Well, if I come by reception at your gym, I promise I won’t come by and tell you how to do your job,” she said, to audience laughter. “That being said, being natural isn’t really a part of my job.”

The nature of being a performer may not be natural, but they certainly were able to make it look that way as they completed the set that didn’t wrap up until just before 11 p.m.

The performance finished with an encore that featured their acoustic abilities in three songs, while one more was reserved for the band leaving the room that was chock o block with women from parts all across B.C. sated for the time being.
