Mark this Thursday on your entertainment calendar; it’s the musical peak of the foreseeable future.
Over the late summer and throughout the fall, our city was blessed with some top-notch concerts from a variety of entertainers in many musical genres. From Rod Stewart to Jay-Z to the Stone Temple Pilots to Jann Arden, Kelowna residents were treated to some big concerts in a short period of time. As a concertgoer, it was pretty easy to get used to.
Unfortunately, if having these high profile acts visit our city is something you’ve become accustomed to, you’re more or less out of luck for the foreseeable future. One exception is this Thursday night, where not one but two successful Canadian recording artists take the stage in Kelowna.
Three Days Grace and Tegan and Sara might not quite measure up to the pop appeal of our 2009 headliners but for now they are the highlights of the year. Canadian rock band Three Days Grace takes the stage at Prospera Place while indie darlings Tegan and Sara bring their beautiful melodies to the Kelowna Community Theatre.
About Tegan and Sara: The pair first hit the music scene with their release Under Feet Like Ours in 1999 and followed up with This Business of Art (2000), If It Was You (2002), So Jealous (2004), It’s Not Fun, Don’t Do It! (DVD 2005), The Con (2007) and ON, IN, AT (2009). Tegan and Sara have been touring since 2000 (their first tour was with Neil Young), and recently finished their 2009 fall US tour to record their latest album. They are well known for their onstage banter where their stories and commentary about their childhood, politics, and life on the road have become an integral part of their live shows.
The twins are originally from Calgary and have been seen on The Late Show With David Letterman, The Tonight Show With Jay Leno, Jimmy Kimmel Live and Late Night with Conan O’Brien. They’ve also been nominated for several Junos and been recognized by Rolling Stone magazine.
Tegan currently lives in Vancouver and Sara resides in Montreal.
About Three Days Grace: The band formed in Norwood, Ontario in 1992 under the name Groundswell. After a brief breakup period, the band regrouped in 1997 as Three Days Grace with a line-up consisting of guitarist and lead vocalist Adam Gontier, drummer and backing vocalist Neil Sanderson, and bassist Brad Walst. In 2003, Barry Stock was recruited as the band’s lead guitarist.
Their 2003 self-titled debut spawned three hit singles, “I Hate Everything About You,” which reached #2 on the Mediabase Modern Rock chart and went Top 5 on the Mediabase Mainstream Rock chart. “Just Like You” climbed to #1 on both the Mediabase Modern Rock and Mainstream Rock charts, while “Home” peaked at #2 on the Mediabase Mainstream Rock chart. One-X debuted on the Billboard album chart at #5 and produced three #1 Mediabase Mainstream Rock singles: “Animal I’ve Become,” “Pain” and “Never Too Late.” In 2007, Mediabase ranked the band as the #1 artist in airplay across all rock formats (Modern Rock, Active Rock, Mainstream Rock). Also that year, R&R/Billboard ranked Three Days Grace as the #1 Active Rock Artist of the Year, #1 Rock Artist of the Year, and #2 Modern Rock/Alternative Artist of the Year. The band has sold more than six million albums worldwide. In 2008, they wrapped up more than two years of touring in the U.S., where they shared stages with fellow rockers Nickelback, Staind, Seether, and Breaking Benjamin.
