Kelowna RCMP press release
The deteriorating road conditions, especially at elevations, has been causing numerous vehicle collisions and headaches for police.
Due to recent wet weather and melting, coupled with dropping temperatures, the roads are becoming icy especially with any change in elevation. Subsequently, stopping distances increase, vehicles are spinning out and drivers are losing control on slick roads resulting in collisions.
Police are asking drivers to slow down and consider the change in driving conditions. Temperatures are expected to continue dropping so icy conditions will prevail for the days ahead.

This morning’s sunshine and melting snow are this afternoon’s black ice.
Police are responding to multiple reports of motor vehicle collisions all around the Central Okanagan due to slippery roads.
Four adults and an infant riding in a Chevy Malibu spun out near the intersection of Crystal Waters and Rawsthorne Road in Lake Country this afternoon and ended upside down on the railway tracks.
RCMP Cpl. Mike Loerke said the car crossed the white line on the right side of the road where it is very icy. It spun a couple of times and went down a 40-foot embankment, landing on the roof on the railway tracks. It appears everyone is OK.
At this time, the car has been pulled up and is being towed away.
A car and an SUV both spun out on Boucherie Road in West Kelowna because of black ice and ended up in the ditch.
And on Westlake Road black ice caused a silver sedan to lose control. It eventually ended with its right rear tire up on the median. Firefighters and a tow truck are on scene. Both occupants appear to be fine.
“Roads throughout West Kelowna are dangerous,” said West Kelowna.com reporter Pieter Uni.
Further unconfirmed reports have a truck down a ravine at Barnaby Road and Chute Lake Road, a rollover accident at Longhill and Sexsmith Roads, and a Handi-Dart bus rear-ended on Baron Road.
Police have requested sanding trucks treat many different roads in the Central Okanagan as the melting snow of earlier today turns to ice.
