REGINA – The Saskatchewan Court of Appeal has shortened the sentence for a young Regina man who shot his former girlfriend in the head.

In its decision released Wednesday, the appeal court agreed Brett Corbin Flaten, 16 at the time of the offence, should be dealt with as an adult. However, the court found the original penalty was too harsh.

Provincial Court Judge Leslie Halliday had sentenced Flaten to nine years. The appeal court reduced that to seven years.

Flaten, now 19, had been dating his victim for more than a year until she ended the relationship in September 2007. On Oct. 15, she nearly died when Flaten shot the 16-year-old girl.

She lost one eye, the hearing in her right ear, and suffered facial paralysis and some cognitive impairment.

Flaten is to remain in a youth facility until he turns 20, when he'll be placed in an adult correctional centre.
