A carport fire early this morning in Glenmore caused damage estimated at nearly $80,000.

Around 3:15 a.m., Kelowna Fire Department crews responded to the 1700 block of Smithson Drive for a fire reported in the carport area of a residence. Three fire engines, one rescue truck and two support vehicles responded with 17 KFD personnel.

Support was provided by Fortis, the RCMP and city crews, who sanded the street due to the accumulation of frozen water from the firefighting efforts.

Damage was contained to the carport area of the structure, with only minor smoke damage to the living area, due to a quick attack initiated by the first arriving fire crews.

Preliminary loss is estimated at $78,000. Two residents of the home plus their pets were offered care by Emergency Social Services volunteers.

KFD Investigators along with the RCMP are on scene and will conduct a fire cause investigation.

The residents of the building were alerted to the fire by a functioning smoke detector, highlighting the fact that working smoke detectors do save lives. The Kelowna Fire Department encourages residents to take a moment and check their smoke detectors.
