The NHL suspended Washington Capitals star forward Alex Ovechkin for two games without pay on Tuesday, for a knee-on-knee hit with Carolina defenceman Tim Gleason on Monday.
At 12:05 of the first period, Ovechkin extended his knee while delivering a hit to Gleason. Ovechkin was assessed a major penalty for kneeing and a game misconduct on the play. Both players were hurt in the collision, but Gleason did return later in the game.
Under the terms of the CBA, and based on his average salary, Ovechkin will forfeit $98,844.16 US. He will miss Washington's next two games — Thursday against Florida and Saturday in Philadelphia.
Corvo out 8 weeks
Carolina Hurricanes defenceman Joe Corvo is expected to be sidelined for at least eight weeks after his right leg was cut by a skate and required surgery.
Corvo's lower right leg was cut by Washington blueliner Karl Alzner's skate during a first-period collision on Monday.
Savard extension
The Boston Bruins have locked up centre Marc Savard to a seven-year contract extension through the 2016-17 season. The average salary-cap hit will be around $4.2 million US per year.
The Ottawa native has played 12 seasons in the NHL with the New York Rangers, Calgary, Atlanta and Boston.
The 32-year-old, who recently returned to action after suffering a broken foot, has four goals and six assists in 11 games this season. He scored 25 goals and 63 assists last season to lead the Bruins in scoring.
Iginla has hot month
If there were any doubts about Jarome Iginla's prospects of playing for Team Canada at the Winter Olympics, he quickly erased them over the past four weeks.
The Calgary Flames star, who got off to his traditional slow start to the NHL season, has simply been on fire during November, en route to being named as the league's first star for the month.
San Jose Sharks centre Joe Thornton was named the second star, while New York Rangers right-winger Marian Gaborik was the third star.
Iginla led all players with 20 points in 14 games during the month.
