PRINCE GEORGE — The Vancouver Giants used another big third period push to dispatch the Prince George Cougars 6-2 on Saturday night. Brendan Gallagher led the four-goal third period outburst for the Giants with three in the final frame to finish with four goals. Kevin Connauton scored his third goal of the weekend, after tallying twice on Friday as the Giants scored three in the third to beat the Cougars 5-4. Garry Nunn was the Giants other scorer. It was the Giants' fourth-straight win over the Cougars.
Clan men rebound to stun Dinos
BURNABY — The No. 10 ranked Simon Fraser University Clan men's basketball team bounced back from Friday night's loss to Lethbridge with an 86-82 upset of the No. 4 ranked University of Calgary Dinos. Senior Kevin Shaw of North Vancouver proved the difference for the Clan (6-1), scoring 20 points, as five SFU players hit double figures. The No. 1 ranked SFU Clan women's basketball team won their 42nd game in a row, defeating the University of Calgary Dinos 110-73. The win improves the Clan to 7-0 on the season.
'Bird men send Bisons packing
WINNIPEG — The No. 2 ranked UBC Thunderbirds men's basketball team (7-0) scored a 93-75 victory over the Manitoba Bisons (3-6) at the Investors Group Athletic Centre on Saturday. UBC never trailed on the strength of the biggest half of Kyle Watson's UBC career, which staked them to a 48-28 advantage at the break. Watson, a fifth-year forward, was a perfect 9-of-9 from the field for 18 points in the first 20 minutes before finishing the game with 20 points and seven rebounds. The No. 8 ranked UBC women rolled over the Bisons 80-66.
Spartans earn split with No. 1 Dinos
CALGARY — The No. 7 Trinity Western Spartans men's volleyball team bounced back from Friday's loss and made good on their second attempt at an upset bid on Saturday, beating the No. 1 University of Calgary Dinos by a set-score of 3-1 (21-25, 25-19, 26-24, 25-20). The Dinos could not weather the Spartan attack, which got a 21 kill performance from second year outside hitter Steven Marshall of Abbotsford. Marshall connected on 46 per cent of his attacks, had six digs and two service aces to round out his match-breaking performance.
Centaurs-Hawks in Subway Bowl
LANGLEY — The Centennial Centaurs advanced to the Subway Bowl provincial championship for the first time since 1990 after beating the New Westminster Hyacks 37-20 in AAA high school football action on Saturday. The Coquitlam school, which has never won the title, will play three-time champion WJ Mouat Hawks of Abbotsford who edged the Vancouver College Fighting Irish 15-14.
Perennial AA power the Windsor Dukes needed overtime to advance to the final over the Sands Scorpions 12-9. The North Vancouver school will play Victoria's Mount Douglas Rams, who silenced the Rick Hansen Hurricanes 35-28. The AA and AAA finals run at 3:30 p.m. and 7 p.m. Saturday at Langley's McLeod Stadium. The AAA final will be broadcast on Rogers Sportsnet.
