At Christmastime, movie theatres are often dominated by seasonal remakes. And while there's nothing wrong with watching A Christmas Carol in 3-D, this year, an entirely different kind of classic holiday story will be pirouetting into a cinema near you. On Dec. 12 and 23, select Cineplex theatres across Canada will broadcast The Nutcracker from Britain's Royal Opera House at Covent Garden in London. As any holiday enthusiast knows, The Nutcracker is itself a retelling of the E.T.A. Hoffman story about a young girl, Clara, and her fantastical adventures on Christmas Eve. Set to Tchaikovsky's famous score, Clara's nutcracker, a Christmas gift left downstairs before bed, comes to life along with her imagination. In this production by Peter Wright for The Royal Ballet, Clara awakes to a world of elaborate and visually enchanting scenery and costumes. It might not have an animated Jim Carrey or those cool 3-D glasses, but the ballet is being broadcast in high definition, which is sure to make it as lifelike for audiences as Clara's toy nutcracker. – Tickets are now on sale at cineplex.com.
