Canadian Football League commissioner Mark Cohon avoided the contentious labour issue of homegrown talent in his annual state-of-the-league address to reporters yesterday in Calgary, refusing to discuss reports suggesting the league will seek to reduce the number of Canadian starters teams are required to use on the field. Cohon repeated one phrase several times — "We understand the importance of Canadians to this league" — but without actually saying whether or not he was in favour of reducing the mandated number of non-import starters to four from seven. The league has reportedly raised the issue in labour talks with the CFL Players' Association. "Any position that I say has to do with our negotiations, I'm the spokesperson for this league," Cohon said. "So I will tell you that we understand the importance of Canadians in this league." The league's collective bargaining agreement with its union is set to expire a day before training camp opens in the spring.

Greed and arrogance is now working its way into the Canada’s game. As a Canadian Football fan this is my vote to let the commissioner know that this idea of reducing Canadian players in the Canadian Football League is unacceptable. He is messing with some of the most educated football fans on the planet – so as Jon Stewart has mentioned, “It is like saying I am partnering with Master Card to buy Christmas Cards this year” Just because you state it, does not make it plausible.
