The Westside Warriors have one more reason to hate the Vernon Vipers.

With a matchup between the two  Okanagan foes set for tonight, the Warriors won’t have much time to concentrate on much else, but the recent trade of Curtis Gedig to the Vipers just might catch their attention.

A West Kelowna native, Gedig joins his third BCHL team, the second this season. In acquiring the seventh-round pick of the New Jersey Devils, the Vipers have added size, strength and experience, while giving up two young prospects. This season Gedig notched six goals and nine points in 23 games with the Capitals.

While the Vipers had no real reason to trade for Gedig, who joins the Ohio Buckeyes next year, the team decided to sacrifice prospects Drew George and Nick Amies in hopes of once again capturing the league championship.

In George, the Vipers lose a highly recruited player who had notched 17 points this season and is considered a pure goal scorer. But Vernon’s depth allowed the organization to move George, along with Amies, a former draft pick of the WHL’s Kelowna Rockets to the Capitals.

Sources outside the Warriors organization have said Gedig has been on the block for three weeks and a handful of teams, including Westside, were interested in his services.

Gedig, a 6-foot-3, 190-pound defenceman, is expected to make his Viper debut tonight against Westside.
