Champagne and caviar was the inspiration for the contrasting colour palette (dark against light) at the new one-bedroom hotel-residence suite at the Trump International Hotel & Tower, Toronto, says interior designer Dan Menchions of II BY IV Design Associates. It's also what both owners and guests alike may find themselves enjoying one day in the site's upscale spaces.
"It's classic contemporary, Old World meets New World," Mr. Menchions says of the design. "When you walk into the space you go wow.' There's a sense of luxury."
The hotel room mock-up, which isn't located in the sales office and is available to view for prospective purchasers only by appointment, showcases the hotel residences that are available for purchase in the condo-hotel, down to the minutest detail.
One of two units II BY IV designed for this purpose, the one-bedroom suite is approximately 900 square feet and has a separate sitting area and a dramatic entry: Black-and-white Blanche Noir marble on the floor and a coffered ceiling with a modern chandelier is a glitzy introduction that elicits gushing praises from the first entry. "It feels warm and inviting and welcoming," Mr. Menchions says.
The sitting room just beyond is glamorous and warm, featuring a neutral palette of cream(champagne) and charcoal (caviar), with pops of aubergine (more caviar) and classically inspired furniture, seen in the grey sofa and two lounge chairs, as well as chrome-and-glass nesting tables that replace the traditional coffee table. The regal tableau sits on a damask carpet. A recessed window is surrounded by cream panelling, with a silverleaf and leather desk – a modern take on Edwardian design – set within. "There's always a beautiful view to the exterior when you're working at the desk," the designer says.
In the bedroom, a king-sized bed is tucked into a panelled niche for a dramatic black backdrop. Framed by the black panelling is an upholstered leather headboard, bordered by a lighter wood for contrast. The headboard extends out on either side to back the nightstands and table lamps, while above the bed is an art panel.
"There will be a variety of cherry-blossom panels that will be part of the art in each of the suites," Mr. Menchions says of the headboard. "Every room will have a different style of these, so that when you walk into one suite it will look completely different from the next."
The ensuite bathroom has its own dramatic elements, with marble extending along the floor and up the walls, and a lacquered black vanity inspired by a steamer trunk, with metal cap details on the drawers. The countertop is the same Blanche Noir marble used throughout the suite, while the open shelving is lined with silver leaf. Candles and vases accessorize the space. "They help make it feel like you're at home," Mr. Menchions says.
