For Your Entertainment
Adam Lambert
(19/RCA/Sony)
Rating: three and a-half stars
OMG! Adam Lambert kissed a boy and TV viewers didn't like it! Big surprise. His "shocking" display at last Sunday's American Music Awards only serves to downplay the relative safeness of the glam rocker's post-Idol debut album. For Your Entertainment lives up to its title, but doesn't go far enough to establish Lambert as more than just a gifted karaoke singer. Music Again is a squealing rocker with a whoosh of synths and sky-high octaves a la Justin Hawkins (ex of The Darkness) and Muse's Matthew Bellamy. The former actually wrote the song for Lambert, while the latter wrote Soaked, a soaring piano ballad laden with strings. For an artist with such a powerful and supple voice, Lambert is often saddled with too much production. Sleepwalker is a wistful pop number (via OneRepublic's Ryan Tedder), but could be even more so if only the grittier side of his pipes were given enough room to breathe. Even the reverberating beats on the title track, which he performed at the AMAs, tend to bury Lambert, but at least his cocky question rings loud and clear. "Can you handle what I'm `bout to do?" he sneers. "`Cuz it's about to get rough for you." If you ask me, that was more than an appropriate warning for those prudish viewers and the folks at CBS. Lambert needs to listen to his own lyrics and apply them to his music.

LOL! Now what about some IQ?
All reviews before AMA were excellent.
Now suddenly 3.5 stars…
Give me a break!

Actually I find this to be a pretty good review. This album makes clear that Adam has huge potential, but he can do so much better if he showcases that voice of his better. I love this album but am looking forward to a second album that will not be so rushed.

I suspect at this point in his life, Adam Lambert is more of a club hopper. The dance tunes on this CD will be played endlessly. Once “For your Entertainment” begins, it’s impossible to keep your feet still. My 61 year old sister got up and danced until the song ended and then played it over again.
I bet the CD is successful in the US and a monster hit overseas.
