There are more than enough international films of note to satisfy visiting cinephiles, including former designer Tom Ford's A Single Man and Jonathan Demme's Neil Young Trunk Show, slated for an outdoor screening.
But it's the Canadian features and short films that are the keystones, according to festival director Stacey Donen. This year the Philip Borsos Competition for New Canadian Feature will be judged by veteran director Ivan Reitman.
Borsos Award nominees: – Year of the Carnivore, by Vancouver director Sook-Yin Lee – Defendor, directed by Peter Stebbings – The Wild Hunt, from director Alexandre Franchi – Skid Love, from director/producer Ryan Arnold – Machotaildrop, from co-directors Corey Adams and Alex Craig
Eight films in the documentary section focus on the environment, with six directors in attendance. Filmmakers Brian Nash, Rene Brar and Andrew Niskerare make their world premieres with their respective ecologically focused documentaries Out of the Woods, Taylor's Way and Chemerical: Redefining Clean for a New Generation.
The festival closes Dec. 6 with Edge of Never, Bill Kerig's documentary about Whistler's Kye Petersen, 15, who decides to ski a route in Chamonix, France, that killed his father nine years earlier.
