Vancouver International Airport will be the first airport in Canada to be equipped with the aTIX, a British-designed security scanner that can detect weapons and liquid explosives in passengers' carry-on bags.

Thirty-one of the new generation of X-ray machines are being installed at the airport following a successful trial.

The machines are made by Smiths Detection and are currently in use in major British airports.

According to the manufacturer, aTIX replaces conventional X-ray scanners which only provide a one-dimensional view of luggage with a system that gives multiple views.

Smiths Detection says aTIX is based on technology used in EDTS (explosive detection tomography systems) and consists of a computerized X-ray machine that takes multiple views of carry-on baggage.

Software algorithms process the images detecting explosives and liquids, the company said.
