Update: RCMP name pedestrian killed in weekend accident

On Nov. 22 at 2:20 a.m., police responded to a pedestrian collision at the intersection of Water Street and Ellis Street.  The pedestrian was transported to KGH however sustained fatal injuries.  The pedestrian was a 23 year old Coldstream resident, Matthew Heenan.

A 47 old Kelowna man was arrested at the scene and investigated for impaired driving.  Charges are pending upon completion of the ongoing investigation.

Anyone who may have witnessed this collision or has any information that may assist in this investigation is asked to contact Cst Chad Lucash at the Central Okanagan Traffic Services at (250)-980-5353 or the Kelowna Detachment at (250)-762-3300.

The male driver of the vehicle was transported to Kelowna Detachment where he provided two samples of his breath. The samples were 150 and 140 mg/100ml.

He is facing charges of Dangerous Operation of a Motor Vehicle and Operating a vehicle with more than 80 mg of alcohol in his blood.

The 47-year-old male from West Kelowna  is set to appear in Kelowna Provincial Court on Jan. 28, 2010.  He does not have a criminal record.

Police are not releasing the name of the victim at this time.  He was 23 years old from Coldstream.

Nov. 22 4:20 p.m.

Kelowna RCMP are investigating a man for suspected impaired driving after an accident at 2:20 a.m. Sunday sent a pedestrian to hospital.

The unidentified man later succumbed to his injuries at Kelowna General Hospital.

Police say the accident happened at the intersection of Ellis and Water Streets and that the driver of the car remained at the scene until emergency personnel arrived.

He was detained by RCMP, although no charges have yet been laid. Police are asking that anyone who witnessed the accident call Central Okanagan Traffic Services at 250-980-8383.

    My condolences to the pedestrian that was tragically killed by a impaired driver. You really need to be extra vigilant on water street when driving. Something that would be more difficult to do after a few drinks.
    There are a few steps that the city could do to make crossings safer as when I drive down water street I often think the pedestrian crossings are obscured by parked cars.

    Make pedestrians visible to motorists by clearing the view of the crossing. Cars should not be parked near crossings to make them safer and allow pedestrians to be seen before they walk into the road
