Almost a million drop-side cribs were recalled late yesterday and will no longer be sold in Canada and elsewhere now that the world's standards organization has come down against them in the wake of multiple baby deaths. The new standards, to be published next week by ASTM International, came as the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission issued a massive recall of Stork Craft drop-side cribs. The plastic hardware on the cribs can break or deform over time, causing the drop side to detach and create a space between the drop side and the mattress. If an infant rolls into this space, he or she can become entrapped and suffocate. Toys 'R' Us already stopped ordering drop-side cribs in March "out of an abundance of caution." Almost every drop-side crib that has been shipped to Sears Canada since October has been modified so that all drop sides are permanently fixed in the up position.
