The occasional Payola$ partner has used his solo career to explore an array of different musical approaches, from folkie to sparse accompaniment, from hip hop to a more conventional rock 'n' roll. On this album, Hyde plays most of the instruments himself, which consequently means that the arrangements are simple but purposefully stated. He also uses the solo medium to explore different sides of himself, such as the lighthearted "Anything For a Pretty Girl," which he doubtless couldn't record with Payola$. Hyde speaks honestly and sometimes breaches topics that are uncomfortable, but that's what makes listening to his albums bracing and compelling.
