In conjunction with the RCMP, Commissionaires BC, Canadian Border Services Agency and Canadian Air Transport Security Authority, Kelowna International Airport will host an Open House Nov. 26 between 3-5 p.m. to provide information to the public and its tenants on the Airport Watch Program.
To ensure the security of passengers and airport property, many Canadian airports have started a Watch Program. The first Canadian program was established in 1999 by the Ottawa MacDonald-Cartier International Airport. Since then, airports including Calgary, Vancouver and Halifax have each started their own programs.
Airport Watch volunteers provide security similar to the Neighbourhood Watch Program. Members monitor general aviation activity, the condition of the perimeter fencing, wildlife activity, parking lots, suspicious behaviours and potential for damage to operating aircraft by looking out for foreign object debris (FOD) on the runway.
Airport Watch members are an extra pair of eyes and ears outside the perimeter fence. Their task is to “Observe, Record and Report.”
For more information on the Airport Watch Program, visit the airport’s website at www.ylw.aero or click Kelowna Airport Watch Program.
