A possible manufacturing problem with a type of insulin used in Canada to treat diabetes in cats and dogs may have altered the drug’s effects, Health Canada said Thursday.
The drug, known as Caninsulan, may contain varying amounts of crystalline zinc insulin, according to a news release. There are concerns it could delay the effects of the drug, and make it last longer overall.
This can lead to fluctuations in the glucose levels of the animals being treated with the drug.
Health Canada said veterinarians should closely monitor their patients for any signs of hyperglycemia, which include increased thirst, increased urination, weight loss and lethargy. Veterinarians should also watch for hypoglycemia signs, which include disorientation, weakness and seizures.
