John Lennon said The Beatles were more popular than Jesus, and now video-game developer Activision says Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 is more popular than Harry Potter – not to mention every other entertainment launch in history.
The video game, which launched on Nov. 10, grossed about $550 million over the first five days of sales, smashing box-office and video-game sales records, said Activision on Wednesday in a news release.
"In just five days . . . Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 has become the largest entertainment launch in history and a pop-culture phenomenon," said Activision Blizzard CEO, Robert Kotick.
Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince holds the largest reported five-day worldwide box-office gross with $394 million. And Grand Theft Auto IV previously held the largest reported five-day worldwide video-game sales record, with $500 million.
