The Vancouver police promised Tuesday a loudspeaker capable of being used as a weapon by emitting loud, painful blasts of sound will have the "tone" capability disabled.
But police won't rule out using the recently purchased Long Range Acoustic Device (LRAD) for "alternative uses" in the future, Chief Jim Chu said in a news release. However, Chu said if the department wants to expand the device's current usage, it will develop appropriate policing and training and seek approval by the Vancouver police board.
The process could take months and there are no plans now to seek approval for using the LRAD as anything other than a loudspeaker, police spokesman Const. Lindsey Houghton said.
The department says it bought the $17,000 device second-hand, as a way to communicate in emergencies and for crowd control. It was first tested at the Celebration of Lights fireworks festival this summer by the marine squad, which preferred it to hand-held megaphones.
