The B.C. Lions rode the arm of quarterback Casey Printers to win 34-27 in overtime against the Hamilton Tigercats in the CFL East Semi-final in Hamilton Sunday.
Former Tigercat Printers completed 23 of 35 passing attempts for a total of 360 yards, including an eight-yard TD toss to Ian Smart in overtime that sealed the win for the Lions and sends them to the division finals next Sunday (1 p.m. EST) against the Montreal Allouettes.
The Hamilton Tigercats pulled of a last minute miracle to send their CFL Eastern Division semi-final against the B.C. Lions to overtime, but in the end the B.C. defense proved to be the difference, shutting them down on their possession in extra minutes.
Although B.C. led 27-16 with five minutes left, Hamilton booted a field goal with 2:13 remaining that got them within reach and on their next possession Dave Stala pulled in a nine-yard TD pass from Hamilton QB Kevin Glenn.
When Glenn again aired it out to a wide-open Marquay McDanlel in the end zone for the two-point conversion to tie the game, Hamilton fans were finally able to breathe again.
Their respite was brief however, as the B.C. defense, which had been dominant along with their special teams, took over after regulation and closed the door on the Ti-Cats on their possession following the B.C. touchdown.
Emmanuel Aresenault was the top B.C receiver on the day, pulling in six receptions for total of 120 yards, while Pual McCallum was good on all four of his field goal attempts, the longest a 43-yarder. B.C. generated 445 yards in total offense to Hamilton’s 440, while the Ti-Cats picked up 437 aerial yards.
Edmonton and Calgary were meeting in the West semi-final to determine who will move on to face the Saskatchewan Roughriders next Sunday in the West final.
