In a short written statement released today, the Okanagan Sun football team announced general manager Derrick Malinchuk has resigned.

He cited family and business as his reasons for stepping down, saying in the statement, “My business is continuing to grow, and I’m now starting a family. Devoting the time to my role with the Sun, I just don’t think is possible for me right now, at least not the time it deserves and needs.”

Derrick was a receiver with the Sun from 1989 through 1993 and coached with the club from 2002 through 2006 before spending the last year and a half as the general manager.
The club also said they will begin the search for a new general manager immediately but will not make an announcement of a replacement until the new year and that Howie Zaron will continue to oversee recruiting.

This year the team finished fourth in the B.C. Football conference with a 6-4 record in the regular season, before losing 25-16 to the eventual champions the Vancouver Island Raiders in the semi-finals on Oct. 24.
