Simon Brault is the CEO of the National Theatre School of Canada. Last night, I attended the opening of Arthur Miller’s Les Sorcieres de Salem (The Crucible) by the French graduating class. It was riveting and as monumental as the theatre it played in — the Monument-National, a heritage building owned and operated by the National Theatre School. These young actors, after four years of intensive collaborative work and supported by their design and production program peers, were willing to jump off a cliff. We were all there — teachers, guest director, coaches and management — proudly and carefully holding a net. They didn’t notice it last night, but someday, they will. Sandra Oh alluded to this invisible net when she accepted her Gascon-Thomas award on the same stage two weeks ago. The star of Grey’s Anatomy — at her core, a theatre actor — graduated from the National Theatre School 16 years ago.
