The second annual Sing for Africa/Sing for Home event organized by fourth-year Nursing students at UBC Okanagan takes place at Evangel Church (3261 Gordon Dr.) on Dec. 1.

It’s a festive evening of Christmas caroling with community speakers on poverty locally and internationally. Doors open at 6 p.m. and caroling is from 7 to 8 p.m. Tickets cost $10.

Funds raised will be divided between Kelowna’s Drop-In Centre (KDIC), and Project GROW (Ghana Rural Opportunities for Women).

The Kelowna Drop-In Centre offers a place where community members can feel safe and supported and allow them an opportunity to get back on their feet. Funds from Sing for Africa/Sing for Home will be used to cover KDIC’s basic operational expenses such as power and grocery bills, as well as for the purchase of personal hygiene packages to be given to those who access the services at Christmas time.

Project GROW, started by students, faculty and staff at UBC Okanagan, supports women and families in Ghana, Africa. The Nursing students will use the evening’s proceeds to purchase much-needed medical supplies and other items for villages in rural Northern Ghana.

On-campus ticket sales will take place Nov. 17 and 25 in the Arts Building foyer, and Nov. 30 and Dec. 1 in the University Centre building foyer. Tickets can be ordered by contacting sing.for.africa@hotmail.com, or get them at the door on the night of the event.
