On Saturday morning, a dozen teens attending a student leadership conference will be lending their artistic talents to help preparations at the Kelowna Fire Museum and Education Centre.
They are serving the community as part of the BC Student Leadership Conference, hosted Oct. 22 through 25 by School District No. 23. Approximately 500 student leaders from more than 50 schools across the Province are taking part in the three day event during which they are volunteering with local organizations in order to make a positive impact in our community.
While at the Kelowna Fire Museum from 10:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. on Oct. 24, students will don coveralls, grab some brushes and will be painting some of the murals that are planned for the future Fire Museum exhibit area.
Kelly Paley, the Museum Society’s Director of Volunteers and Donor Relations says, “We’re thrilled to have these talented young people from across BC offer their services to help us move the museum closer to reality. It’s really great that while they are in our community, they’re helping groups like ours, leaving something of value behind.”
The Museum is located at 1630 Water Street, next to the historic Water Street fire hall. The museum collection will house displays of fire equipment and memorabilia highlighting the more than a century of service to the citizens of Kelowna. Also planned is an education centre to help children across the Central Okanagan learn about making safe choices, especially when it comes to fire.
You can learn more about the plans for the museum by visiting its website: www.firemuseum.ca. It also provides visitors with important information about how they can help the Friends of the Fire Museum Society either by volunteering or through financial donations.
All funds-raised are tax deductible and will go toward construction and operation of fire museum and education centre. For detailed information on various donation programs please visit www.firemuseum.ca or email donate@firemuseum.ca.
