Orchard Park Shopping Centre is the place to be for apple-lovers this Saturday. Over 20 locally grown varieties will be available to taste at the 21st annual Apple Fair.
Join BC Orchard Industry Museum staff and volunteers on Saturday, October 24th for live entertainment, children’s crafts, and apple tasting. You’ll find all the Apple Fair activity in Sky Court at the mall, beginning at 9:00 a.m. and ending at 6:00 p.m. Different event hours had originally been advertised, however the Apple Fair will run all day Saturday in conjunction with Orchard Park’s hours of operation. There is no admission fee.
Participating community members include the BC Fruit Growers’ Association, which will partner with the BC Orchard Industry Museum to provide apple tastings and apple education. Available for tasting will be familiar varieties such as Aurora Golden Gala, Fuji, Spartan, Gala, and Golden Delicious. In addition there will also be some heirloom varieties and experimental varieties donated by PICO- the Okanagan Plant Improvement Corporation at the Summerland Research Station.
Heirloom apples are typically older apple varieties that are no longer grown as part of large-scale agriculture. Apples such as Belle de Boskoop, Haralson, and Criterion are considered heirloom varieties and will be available to sample at the Apple Fair, along with SPA 493, an experimental and as yet unnamed apple from the Summerland Research Station.
There will be live entertainment throughout the day. The Brightside Cloggers will perform at 11:30 a.m., followed by the BC Old Time Fiddlers at 1 p.m.
