Given the economy is in tatters, it’s perhaps fitting that the wine served at the first event of the 29th annual Okanagan Fall Wine Festival was poured from a brown paper bag.
It’s In the Bag, held last night at the Keg Steakhouse, invites participants to correctly identify the grape varietal of a selection of red and white wines hidden inside paper bags.
“It’s a lot of fun,” said organizer Christina Ferreira. “We had a few people that named them all.”
Of course, there were also plenty of people who didn’t.
Two ladies, sipping their wine and peering intently at the wine checklist, seemed puzzled. “We’re in trouble,” one of them laughed.
Another man who said he was an wine industry rep for seven years, was mildly grousing.
“I usually get them all, but I missed one,” he said. “I think they made a mistake. The whites were warm and the reds were chilled. That threw me off.”
The fall winefest runs until Oct. 11 with some 147 events up and down the Okanagan Valley.
